Even if you know exactly what you want from a future home, there can be an overwhelming number of options. One thing
many buyers want but aren’t completely clear about is the concept of a “move-in-ready” home. The more you know about
the details of this term, the better homebuying decisions you can make.
Turn-key vs. move-in-ready
Sometimes, move-in-ready means a home is brand new – but it’s important to make sure exactly what that means.
Technically, a home counts as move-in-ready as long as it meets all local code requirements. This doesn’t mean you
won’t have other home improvement projects or upgrades to deal with.
A turn-key home, however, is truly move-in ready. There are no outstanding projects requiring your attention, and you
can begin living comfortably as soon as possible.
Advantages of a turn-key home
- No more waiting: Homebuying is a long process, and when it’s over, you want to enjoy the fruits
of your labor right away. If you buy a home without any outstanding upgrade or repair needs, you’ll be able to
enjoy it sooner.
- New upgrades: While there’s no guarantee a turn-key home will come with the latest and greatest
appliances and features, it does leave more room in your budget for them. If you’re not worried about painting,
repairing floors or finishing a basement, you can focus on exciting new features.
- Motivated sellers: Whether you buy a brand-new home or a home with recent upgrades, these
sellers are often very motivated. Builders want to get paid for the work they have done. Sellers of upgraded
homes wish to get their homes their plates and get a return on their investment.
Finding a turn-key home that’s truly ready to live in can take some time, but the benefits may be worth it.
